Getting Started

The Centralized Air emission Repository On-Line (CAROL) is a web site developed by the Great Lakes Commission that uses maps of the Great Lakes region to illustrate the amount of toxic chemicals being released to the basin. The data is compiled by the eight Great Lakes states and the province of Ontario and presents the best available emission release data for a calendar year. The Great Lakes jurisdictions believe this work provides a strong foundation for building national and binational strategies to reduce toxic air emissions affecting the basin.

Click here to learn the basics of CAROL; the Frequent Asked Questions (FAQs) include instructions on how to make a map by searching a single chemical, how to see how much chemical releases for a particular area and year, and how to view data for facilities in the Great Lakes basin.

CAROL Point Source Emission Browser

Using the popular "Google Map" interface, explore point source emission data collected as part of the Great Lakes Air Toxics Emissions Inventory by ZIP code. Click on map below to enter application.

Background

The overall goal of the CAROL is to better communicate the contents of the repository to distinct user groups throughout the basin. The CAROL system is enhancing and built upon the Regional Air Pollutant Inventory Development System (RAPIDS) database, which has been a key component of on-going efforts of each of the eight Great Lakes states and the province of Ontario to assess the impacts of toxic air pollutants on the Great Lakes region, click here for more information.
