Online Metadata Resources
The websites listed and briefly described below represent a strong knowledge base for metadata and are presented in no particular order.

http://geology.usgs.gov/tools/metadata/tools/doc/faq.html- While not officially sanctioned by USGS or FGDC, this FAQ list gives a thorough and straight-forward explanation of metadata, its importance, and some of the tools that can be used to create it.

http://www.csc.noaa.gov/metadata - Coastal Services Center – Coastal Metadata Training and Materials: If you have coastal geospatial data that need to be documented with metadata, and you are not sure how to go about it, then you have come to the right place. This coastal metadata reference site is designed to provide information on metadata creation, validation, and publication.

http://www.fgdc.gov/metadata/metadata.html - The Federal Geographic Data Committee’s metadata website is a source for primary documentation regarding FGDC sanctioned standards, extensions, profiles and much more.

http://www.nbii.gov/datainfo/metadata - NBII Metadata Resources: The National Biological Information Infrastructure is a cooperative effort coordinated by the USGS that is dedicated to increasing access to biological data and information. This site contains information and links to other resources regarding metadata training, standards, production and discoverability.

http://badger.state.wi.us/agencies/wlib/sco/meta/colorstd/colorstd.html - The 'Colorized' Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata attempts to encapsulate the production rules of the 1998 version of the Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM), FGDC-STD-001-1998, and the Biological Data Profile of the Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata, FGDC-STD-001.1-1999, through the use of font style and color in an hierarchical arrangement of all possible metadata elements.

http://www.lmic.state.mn.us/chouse/meta_help.html - Minnesota Land Management Information Center Metadata Assistance: This site is a well structured source of metadata information and documentation relating to the operations and guidelines set by the Minnesota Land Management Information Center with links to other regional and federal online metadata resources.

http://www.intelec.ca/m3cat_faq_a.html - FAQ page for the M3Cat (Multi-standard, Multilingual Metadata Cataloguing) tool which allows the entry of metadata for geospatial data sets. Based on more than 10 years of research and practical experiences, M3CAT has been designed and developed to offer flexibility and to benefit from the World Wide Web environment. M3Cat is provided free to potential users and has been tested with half a dozen governmental organizations involved in the management of geospatial data. It works in a Web environment, supports XML and SGML and can interface to the ANSI/NISO Z39.50 FGDC GEO profile.

http://www.state.wi.us/agencies/wlib/sco/metatool/mtools.htm#TOOLBOX - This page leads to summaries of most of the known metadata tools used for documenting geospatial data and serving geospatial metadata. It includes tools for entering and editing metadata and utilities for preprocessing, extracting, post processing, and validating metadata. Most of these tools were designed to help complete Content Standards for Digital Geospatial Metadata (CSDGM) metadata, but several have been tuned to produce specific local metadata profiles.
